Nestle starts plant-based replacement for tuna

Sales will begin at the end of summer 2020 in Switzerland. The product contains water, wheat gluten,

pea protein, canola oil, salt and natural flavors. All ingredients are of plant origin.

The company will produce vegetable tunaunder the Garden Gourmet brand in glass jars, and some supermarkets will have ready-made Vuna sandwiches. Nestlé recommends using plant-based tuna in salads, sandwiches and pizzas.

Analysts believe plant-based alternativesmeat, fish and seafood can set a new direction in the market. Moreover, Asia will most likely become the main buyer of vegan and vegetarian products.

The division's revenue last year was$ 12.2 billion (with total revenue of Nestle in 2019 at $ 101.9 billion). And although the share of products based on herbal alternatives is still small - about $ 220 million last year, their sales are growing rapidly. In the first half of 2020 alone, they grew by 40%.

Nestle CEO Mark Schneider said that the company intends to further develop the vegetarian direction.
