Biologists from Monash University studied the effect of nettle root and leaf extract on male
Researchers have previously discovered two proteins thatprovide transport of spermatozoa, called α1A-adrenergic receptor and P2X1-purinoreceptor. Disabling these proteins causes male fertility. Experiments have shown that the viability of spermatozoa is preserved, and all other organs work without disturbance.
In a new study, researchers found thatNettle leaf extract blocks the function of one of these proteins, P2X1 purinoreceptors. In mice that were injected with these substances, there was a violation of the muscles of the genitourinary system. At the same time, they could mate in the same way as ordinary mice, but the likelihood of offspring was reduced.
In this study, we saw that the extractnettle leaves dioecious reduces the contractility of the smooth muscles of the urinary tract and genital organs, acting as an antagonist of P2X1-purine receptors.

Scientists believe that substances released fromnettle leaves, will become the basis for the creation of male oral contraceptives. Their advantage is that they do not harm spermatozoa, which means that taking drugs will not affect potency in the future. However, the technology needs to be refined to increase efficiency: a 53% reduction in fertility does not guarantee protection against unwanted pregnancy.
