New AI analyzes if the driver is now ready to take control of the car

The new technology was developed by a team from the German Institute for Optics, System Technology and Processing

Fraunhofer images: it is needed to work with cameras in the car. These can be conventional cameras, infrared, or even 3D depth cameras.

Fully autonomous cars will appear in the near future, however, drivers will still have to do it from time to time. The new system will help with this: it will assess whether the driver is ready to take control at the moment or whether he is distracted by something.

In the new development , the on-board computer analyzes the video from the camerasIn the car: it uses AI-based algorithms to determine the posture of the driver and other passengers, and then matchesThese postures are already known, such as face-to-face communication, sleeping, or watching the road. The system can also recognize that the driver is on the phone.

In a situation where the driver needs to take control, for example, in a road repair area, the system warns the person behind the wheel and also checks whether he is ready to steer.

In case the driver is not ready, the system will calculate how long it will take to focus on the road again. Therefore, the AI jet is fully ready and only then turns off the autopilot.
