New AI system diagnoses internet addiction

Specialists of the Research and Design Center for Cognitive Neurosciences and Neurotechnologies of the university, together with

Tsentrprogramsystem, the Regional Center for Psychological, Medical and Social Support of Children and Youth, and the Open Engineering School of Belgorod State University have developed an artificial intelligence system to diagnose the degree of interest in the Internet among adolescents and young people.

Researchers from Belgorod StateNational Research University created a play space or stimulator in which participants perform everyday, familiar activities as close as possible to the real conditions of working on the Internet.

Psychologists note that children develop an excessive fascination with the Internet, which reaches a pathological addiction.This can lead to antisocial behavior.

According to a population-based online survey, 4% of 25,000 schoolchildren in grades 8-11 in the Belgorod Region are prone to Internet addiction.

The authors based the new development on the results of the study, which identified various types of problem Internet users:

  • Internet communicators,
  • Internet researchers,
  • passionate about making money online,
  • consumers of video and audio content on various topics.
