New lithium-carbon battery for electric vehicles charges in 90 seconds

The German company Mahle has teamed up with battery manufacturer Allotrope Energy and developed a new technology

for the production of batteries. Their design is made of a high speed anode combined with a cathode. An organic electrolyte separates both parts.

According to the developers, such a constructionallows supercapacitors to be charged very quickly and also stores energy at a high density. As a result, the new lithium-carbon cell delivers up to 20 kW of fast charging power.

Also, the battery is not subject to thermal damage.degradation of lithium batteries and is stable at high temperatures. Therefore, it is possible to supply high current and quickly charge the device without an external cooling system. 

The authors analyzed the performance of their battery forelectric scooter models with a maximum mileage of 25 km. If charged with a regular 500Wh battery, it would take 30 minutes. The new battery, created by the researchers, can charge this electric vehicle in 90 seconds thanks to supercapacitors.

In addition, the new lithium-carbon battery does not use rare earth metals and is completely recyclable.
