New materials for cathodes will speed up charging by 3-4 times

Company representatives note that chargers will be made without the use of cobalt and nickel.

Particles of the new material have a diameter of no more than100 nanometers. Due to this, lithium ions will move more freely in the cathode. The new material allows not only to shorten the charging time of the batteries, but also to extend their service life three times.

Representatives Taiheiyo Cementthey plan to invest $9.4 million in organizing the production of a new material: it is planned to produce up to 100 tons of products annually. And by 2025, production volumes will be increased tenfold.

As company representatives explained, cathodesthe new type will not be required in the production of cobalt or nickel. The latter component has recently become more expensive and also increases the fire hazard of the battery.

There are ethical issues as well:approximately 70% of the world's cobalt reserves are concentrated in the Congo region, where military conflicts do not subside, and child labor is used in the extraction of the mineral. Due to the pandemic, the construction industry in Japan is going through hard times, so cement manufacturers are trying to find new uses for their competencies.
