New polymers inactivate coronavirus on different surfaces

Anionic polymers can quickly and effectively inactivate human coronaviruses. They can

cover various surfaces - textiles, countertops or walls. Virus inactivation will occur in the presence of sufficient humidity.

When anionic polymers absorb water, protonscan move along nanoscale channels to the surface, creating a highly acidic environment that can inactivate viruses, kill bacteria and mold. Scientists have previously demonstrated that several of the anionic polymers are effective against a number of pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and the influenza strain.

Scientists managed to identify fundamentallya new inactivation mechanism and a family of polymers that expand the arsenal of the health sector to combat the spread of coronavirus. In laboratory experiments, researchers have demonstrated that certain anionic polymers can completely inactivate SARS-CoV-2 in just five minutes and the human coronavirus surrogate HCoV-229E in 20 minutes.

Kraton Corporation is in the process of evaluating the use of some of these polymers under various conditions.
