New species of monkeys discovered in Brazil

The discovery was made by a team of researchers led by Rodrigo Costa Araujo, junior researcher

Paraense Museum Emilio Goeldi.

Amazonian monkeys of the genus Mico are among themost diverse group of apes, and the region in which they live has accounted for half of global land-use changes over the past 30 years.

Currently, no measures have been developed to preserve the habitats of these monkeys, because, first of all, they are poorly studied.

The total number of species of Amazonian monkeys remains unknown.

New discovered species M.schneideri was named after Professor Horacio Schneider. Previously, in 2019, it was mistakenly classified as another species of this genus—M. emiliae. However, in a new study, the error was eliminated.

The authors continue to study the new M.schneideri in order to clarify its habitat and abundance. This will help to understand how threatened this species is with extinction and what measures are needed to prevent this.
