Researchers whose results are published inin the journal Nature Cell Biology, in experiments on mouse models of pancreatic cancer and melanoma found that a stress protein known as ATF4 allows fibroblasts to support tumor growth by promoting the formation of blood vessels that serve the tumor. Deletion of ATF4 in fibroblasts severely disrupted tumor-supporting new vessel formation and tumor growth without causing significant harm to the mice, the researchers found.

“Our results show that inhibitionATF4 may work against many types of cancer, and we are now actively working on this strategy,” – said senior study author Konstantinos Koumenis. “Every tumor we looked at increased ATF4 levels.”
