New upgrade makes $737 million B-2 Spirit nuclear bomber immune to Russian air defense system

The American strategic bomber B-2 Spirit from Northrop Grumman has become invulnerable after modernization

The United States Air Force was able tomake significant progress in upgrading the strategic bomber. Northrop Grumman aircraft worth more than $700 million received a new defense control system.

The B-2 Spirit is equipped with sensors thatresponsible for detecting enemy air defenses and allowing the bomber to evade missiles. The National Interest notes that the new control system has become especially relevant after the emergence of a new generation of Russian air defense systems that can track stealth fighters.

The B-2 Spirit became the first mass-produced heavyan aircraft designed according to the “flying wing” design. It is used to break through layered air defenses. The bomber has a maximum take-off weight of 171,000 kg and can carry a payload of 27,000 kg.

The plane is capable of speeds up to Mach 0.95(1010 km/h). The flight range is 11,100 km, and the combat radius is 5,300 km. The B-2 Spirit can be equipped with AGM-158 JASSM cruise missiles, GBU-27 precision-guided weapons, AGM-154 JSOW and JDAM, and B61-11 or B83 nuclear weapons.
