Nokia and NASA plan to launch 4G network on the Moon

The agency's plans include connecting mobile bases on the Moon where colonizers will live. Specialists

will create several research andmining centers. Their functioning will also depend on a fast data exchange network, which is what researchers want to use 4G for, but they soon plan to switch to 5G. They recently tested this technology and stated that its functionality would be suitable for the Moon.

During the tests, the researchers usedfour telescopes in New Mexico and one of the satellites orbiting the Earth. The signal was transmitted using a laser in the form of coded infrared pulses. The telescopes were able to send a 40W signal. Scientists received an access point on the lunar surface with a download speed of 19.44 Mbps and a transfer speed of 622 Mbps.

"The system could keep in touch with the lunarsurface over longer distances, higher speeds and greater reliability than current standards, ”NASA said in its contract announcement.

The presence of cellular communication on the moon can providethe connection between astronauts, rovers, habitats of employees, the scientists noted. "We want to present the [lunar] infrastructure that will create an international partnership for the largest, broadest and most diverse coalition of researchers in human history," NASA said.

The agency will also finance devices forproduction and storage of energy on the surface of the moon. Scientists will present a "jumping robot" that can launch and carry small payloads from one site to another.

Previously, Vodafone and Nokia plannedcreate a 4G mobile connection on the moon. Especially for this purpose, they wanted to deliver equipment to the Earth satellite, which, according to the mission staff, "weighs less than a package of sugar." It was supposed to transmit high-definition data streams from the lunar landscape to Earth.
