Norway launches world's first liquid hydrogen ferry

Norwegian company Norled has launched the world's first ferry that operatesFrom the beginning of 2023

For a year, the company carried out system tests of the MF Hydra at the wharf in the town of Elmeland.Sea trials of the ferry were completed successfully, and the company received permission to carry out commercial transportation fromThe ferry will run inland on a triangular route between the three cities.

The 82.4 m long ferry can simultaneously transportup to 300 passengers and 80 vehicles. It has a top speed of 9 knots thanks to two 200 kW fuel cells, two 440 kW generators and two thrusters. The ferry is equipped with an 80 m³ hydrogen storage tank and is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by up to 95%.

The creation of the vessel was the result of the workinternational collaboration. The onboard hydrogen systems are developed by a German company, and the fuel cells that convert hydrogen into electricity are from Denmark.

The developers note that currentlyonly this ferry and the space industry uses liquid hydrogen as fuel. They believe that the successful operation of the ferry will open up a new direction for shipping with a low carbon footprint.
