Not a star or a planet: unusual celestial bodies of the same age as the solar system have been found

Astronomers knew about brown dwarfs before - these are objects that cannot be classified as either stars or stars.

planets. They form as stars, but they don't have enough mass to initiate nuclear fusion, the process that makes stars shine.

Astronomers thought they knew wellbrown dwarfs until the discovery of an object nicknamed "Casualty". The atypical brown dwarf was discovered by pure chance: it was not detected during routine studies, since it was not similar to any of the 2,000 previously discovered brown dwarfs in the Solar System.

Typically, brown dwarfs cool down and their brightnessbegins to change. But Accident's typical wavelengths were weak, meaning the object was very cold and old. Its approximate age is 10 to 13 billion years, about twice the normal average age of a brown dwarf. The distance to the object is about 50 light years.

This means that “Accident”formed when our galaxy was much younger and had a different chemical composition. At the time of its formation, there was almost no carbon in the solar system: this means that there is now very little methane in the atmosphere of the super-old brown dwarf.

If this is so, then, according to the authors, there should be many more ancient objects in our galaxy. To do this, astronomers need to change their approaches to searching for them.
