NVIDIA's new Jetson AGX Orin AI brain for robots is six times more powerful than its predecessor

NVIDIA has released a sequel to the Jetson AGX Xavier, its $1,100 AI brain for robots that it

released back in 2018. A new module calledJetson AGX Orin, has six times the processing power of the Xavier, although it has the same form factor and still fits in the palm of your hand.

NVIDIA developed Orin as“an energy-efficient AI supercomputer” designed for use in robotics, autonomous and medical devices, as well as extreme AI applications that may currently seem impossible.

The chipmaker claims that Orin is capable of performing200 trillion operations per second. It is built on the NVIDIA Ampere GPU architecture, equipped with Arm Cortex-A78AE processors and equipped with next-generation deep learning and vision accelerators, enabling it to run a multitude of AI applications.

Orin will give users access tothe company's software and tools, including the scalable NVIDIA Isaac Sim robotics simulation application, which creates photorealistic, physically accurate virtual environments in which developers can test and control their AI robots. For healthcare users, there is NVIDIA Clara for AI-powered imaging and genomics. And for autonomous vehicle developers, there is NVIDIA Drive.

The company has not yet announced how much it will costOrin, but it intends to make the Jetson AGX Orin module and development kit available in the first quarter of 2022. Those interested can register to receive availability notifications on the NVIDIA website. The company will also talk about Orin at NVIDIA GTC, which will take place from November 8 to 11.
