Recently, information appeared on the Internet that Telegram is preparing a paid Premium subscription, which will expand
user capabilities for $5 per month.Today Pavel Durov confirmed this information, simultaneously explaining why such a decision was made. According to the project manager, many users asked to raise the bar of restrictions within the messenger (in particular, on the download speed and the maximum size of transferred files), but the company is not able to do this for everyone due to the load on the servers and the costs of their maintenance will be “uncontrollable”. Therefore, the decision was made to charge for the use of advanced features, which would give a certain group of users more options and maintain a free mode for existing features.
Durov promises that for the free version of Telegrameverything will remain as it was, and new functions will be introduced. He also noted that the launch of advertising integrations in Telegram channels exceeded their expectations, but in the future the project should be funded by users, not advertisers. The above cost is not mentioned in the official post, but, obviously, it will be just that.
