We recently wrote that one of the best phones for portrait photography is the new OnePlus 7 Pro. With this
Portrait mode
As part of the test drive, the cameras took partthe following flagships — OnePlus 7 Pro, iPhone XS Max, Pixel 3 and Galaxy S10+. The parameter that was evaluated — portrait photography. You can see examples and analysis of each image below.
Scene 1
Samsung Galaxy S10 + made a portrait of excellent quality with natural color reproduction. But still the colors are a little faded.
A portrait taken with an Apple iPhone XS Max has more pleasant color rendering. Contrast, exposure, detail — at the level.
Oneplus 7 Pro uses the perfect focal length for portraits. As a result, we get an amazing portrait. It only has one small flaw: the colors have a slight purple tint to them.
The Google Pixel 3 also took a great portrait.Colorful, very detailed, the most believable bokeh here. A picture taken with a professional camera looks approximately the same. Not only the background, but also the foreground is slightly blurred.
Scene 2
Samsung Galaxy S10+ does not show the most brilliant results. Again, a slight fade and lack of the desired saturation. However, the faces and details look great here.
The Apple iPhone XS Max has a much brighter portrait. More intense background blur in this frame looks great. Stronger contrast.
The OnePlus 7 Pro camera made a very natural and pleasing portrait. Natural exposure and pleasant colors.
The portrait that Pixel 3 made is excellent, but it is too rich and contrasting.
Scene 3
Not the best shot you could expect from a Galaxy S10 +. Pretty boring against the rest.
The Apple iPhone XS Max turned out to have a pretty good frame, nice contrast, overall exposure, moderate brightness. However, the complexion appears a little yellow-green.
OnePlus 7 Pro also did not show the best results in this test. The whole image is a little overexposed and the colors are a little washed out, but the face looks very nice. The skin tone on the face is correct.
Google Pixel 3 demonstrates excellent background separation. Good detail and color reproduction.
Scene 4
Samsung Galaxy S10 +: this snapshot seems rather mediocre. In addition, the fact that the Galaxy S10 + uses its usual wide-angle camera for portraits makes the head of a person disproportionate compared to its body.
Apple iPhone XS Max: the photo is pretty good: both sharpness and overall exposure, although the colors are a bit unrealistic. If you look closely, you will notice that the iPhone, as it were, forgot to apply a blur in one place.
OnePlus 7 Pro: Portrait shot with excellent body proportions. The only caveat — some purple tints on the face again.
Google Pixel 3: Too much blur of the background, the feeling of using Photoshop. Not the best option.
Scene 5
Considering the challenging shooting conditions, Galaxy S10+did a great job. First off, this is one of only two phones that even managed to capture a portrait here (the other being the Pixel), and the result isn't too bad. Apart from slightly washed out colors, we get acceptable bokeh in the background, as well as pleasing exposure throughout the scene.
Apple iPhone XS Max was a fiasco. The man is barely visible in the photo.
OnePlus 7 Pro also failed to make a good portrait frame. A lot of noise. But very bright and nice colors.
Google Pixel 3 made a nice portrait shot. But with the blurring of the background, he again overdid it. Because of this, the photo looks too artificial.
Conclusion
If you buy one of these phones,Under ideal conditions, each of them will make excellent portrait shots for you. However, if we are talking about shooting in low-light conditions, then you definitely shouldn’t take an iPhone here. The Google Pixel 3 does go a little further in terms of photo quality under various conditions. But if we are talking about the price-quality ratio, then OnePlus 7 Pro can be considered the leader here. Not only does it cost a lot less than all of its direct competitors, but it outperforms some of its fiercest competitors like the Galaxy and iPhone.
