Osteoarthritis cured with acne medication

Scientists have repurposed a drug for acne and psoriasis to treat hand osteoarthritis. Animal experiment

models have shown that it can prevent disease progression. Researchers are now conducting experiments on humans.

Oxford University researchers studiedcommon variants of the ALDH1A2 gene, which is associated with severe osteoarthritis of the hands. The team confirmed this correlation using data from a UK Biobank study. Using RNA sequencing, the scientists determined the relationship between gene variants, low retinoic acid and the inflammation seen in OA.

Then biologists turned their attention to the drugtalarozole, designed to inhibit the metabolism of retinoic acid for the treatment of acne, psoriasis and related skin conditions. When used in the knee joints of mouse models with hand osteoarthritis, the drug reduced cartilage damage and inflammation after just six hours. Experiments on pig joints ex vivo confirmed the success of this treatment regimen.
