Paying does not mean learning. Why courses do not guarantee successful work and what to do about it

The number of people wishing to learn new digital professions on different platforms in 2022 increased by 25-300%. This

a long-term global trend: from 2011 to 2021, the number of students taking online courses in the world increased from 300,000 to 220 million people, according to McKinsey data.

A representative of the Ministry of Digital Development estimated it at 500 thousand-1million frames. The competition for IT vacancies for applicants today is more comfortable than in other industries: less than one specialist applies for the position of data engineer, 3.3 candidates apply for the position of analyst, 6.9 candidates apply for the position of tester. For comparison: more than 100 people apply for the vacancy of a courier, 96 apply for a driver, according to Skypro research.

What will happen next?

There is a shortage in IT.Demand will only grow as the attractiveness of the information technology industry develops. In Russia, companies publish more than 70,000 vacancies in this area per month, according to data from hh.ru.

Employers are making IT an even more attractive industry. Many people change professions, learn new onesskills, are hired by such a company and create even more jobs through their developments. Thus, demand in the labor market turns interest in IT courses into a self-exciting system.

Marketing budgets of Edtech companies are growing. This is also increasing the demand for online education.Companies invest in advertising tools and artificially draw attention to certain professions. It is important for beginners to soberly assess the demand for different specialties in order to become in demand in the future.

Why does it make sense to get a profession in the IT industry?

It is easier to move into information technology than into other industries. The portrait of candidates on the labor market is alsois transforming: job seekers increasingly want to work remotely and are applying for a serious salary. At the same time, they show different experience: in finance and law, for example, most applicants have more than three years of experience, so it is more difficult for a newcomer to compete in this area. But most applicants for tester positions have 1-3 years of experience or no experience at all.

Courses more often offer training in professions, which are in demand in the labor market. However, the relative ease of changing industries is offset by the need for constant training (through courses, self-education or master classes). Any IT specialist should follow industry trends and develop their own hard skills.

How to get an IT profession?

You can master the IT profession in different ways and fromEach of these paths has disadvantages. When learning on your own, people often overestimate their own willpower and motivation. According to a study from Teachers College at Columbia University, 15% of students complete edX and Coursera courses completely independently. That is, out of 100 students, on average, 15 reach the end.

Online school or platform services are goodrelevance of content, which is constantly being transformed. It is also important that students do not study alone. The human psyche helps us achieve goals when we are not doing something alone. Engaged learning, activities and assessment are essential to effective career development, University of Florida research shows.

At the same time, the main magic that affects the demand for a future specialist occurs at the start of training. Here's what it takes.

What does it take to get an IT profession?

Choose your profession carefully. For example, many schools offer coursesgame designers, but if you carefully analyze the labor market, it turns out that the demand for such specialists is not great - no more than 300 vacancies throughout Russia, according to hh.ru. Therefore, some platforms offer a small number of courses, but all of them are selected taking into account the situation on the labor market.

When choosing a profession for training, you should pay attention to these criteria:

  1. Number of vacancies. The fewer vacancies on the market, the lower the demand for the profession in the industry. Choose a specialty that requires a lot of employees.
  2. Applicant experience. The more vacancies with a low entry threshold, the better for you as a novice specialist.
  3. Salary level.Don't expect a high levelsalary at the start of a career, but the amount is a certain litmus test. The lower the starting salary range, the lower the income growth potential for the applicant.
  4. Busy.At the start of your career, you should not choose a profession with a part-time job, because in the process of the first job you have to learn and constantly practice.
  5. Stack of technologies and competencies.Do not choose jobs that require knowledge of a large number of unexplored technologies. The first job should consolidate the basic knowledge that you received after the courses.

Consider your way of thinking. You can't succeed at what you don't like.It is important to correlate your values, desires, habits with the daily routine of the chosen specialty. You can focus on career guidance events of universities and EdTech companies. To keep track of them, you should look at the calendars of events on the websites and social networks of educational platforms - marathons of professions, webinars and other events often appear there. They will help you navigate the selected profile.

Think about the value to society. Not only your own benefit is important, but also the benefitfrom the work of a specialist to society, the economy and a specific enterprise or company. People who bring real value to society earn a lot. A team of 100 developers can change the lives of millions of people. Hence the high cost of their labor.

For example, specialists who develop a helmetNeurochat solves many problems of people who cannot communicate through speech or movement. In addition to solving socially important problems, the company earns a lot of money on its own solutions.

Be prepared for constant change. The IT sector is transforming and this process is notwill stop. It is impossible to learn once and work as a front-end developer or marketer with the same set of skills for the rest of your life. You need to constantly study, even within the same profession.

What kind of employees are companies looking for?

Graduates from reliable partners. Some online courses and learning platformshave become a “red rag” for the employer - they don’t even start a conversation with graduates from there. Such organizations massively trained specialists who ultimately did not receive the necessary knowledge due to poor training, lack of strict training regulations and quality control of the level of teaching. Organizations have tried to compensate for the lack of knowledge by the aggressive behavior of their students in the labor market, as a result of which some employers have introduced similar filters.

It also happens the other way around:Candidates from individual schools or universities are more actively invited to work; for this, employers build partnerships with platforms. Graduates can expect expedited resume review. Therefore, it is worth choosing schools that provide support, rather than just giving students access to content. It is also worth studying documents that confirm the school’s cooperation with major employers.

Holders of flexible skills.Often graduates can demonstrate confidentknowledge of the subject area, but lacking in soft skills. They must be able to communicate, work in a team, approach technical problems creatively, give and receive feedback, and behave in a stressful situation. Many employers are confident that flexibility and the ability to negotiate with colleagues are more important than knowledge of programming languages, simply because knowledge can be improved, but it may not be possible to quickly become effective in communication.

With commercial experience.Employers are interested in hiring employees withexperience of 5 years or more, but due to various restrictions they choose to complete the training of beginners. To stand out in this stream, it is worth coming into contact with a real customer. Therefore, some training platforms provide the opportunity to work with projects of real companies. When choosing a school, you need to pay attention to those projects that offer internships and work with a real customer.

With adequate salary expectations.A beginner specialist can apply forsalary of 70-80,000 rubles. Salaries in the IT sector for specialists with experience grow by an average of 15-20% per year, which means that in 2-3 years such a candidate can count on 150-170,000 rubles and career growth by one or two levels. A candidate's low or high expectations in this area will tell the employer that he does not follow the market and cannot adequately evaluate himself.
