People save TVs during a volcanic eruption in Indonesia

On Monday, rescuers evacuated people from nearby villages after the eruption of Mount Semeru

in Indonesia. At the same time, government officials warn about the danger of lava cooling, despite the volcano’s lesser activity.

More than 2,400 villagers fled their homes and took refuge in 11 evacuation centers after Java's tallest mountain erupted early Sunday morning.

“The military, police and local authorities continueevacuate people to Kurah Kobokan, where clouds of hot ash and cold lava could enter, Abdul Mukhari, a spokesman for Indonesia's disaster management agency, told local television. “Currently, the total number of evacuees is 2,489 people.”

According to an AFP journalist, on MondayIn the morning, dozens of evacuees from the Lumajang district, where Semeru is located, ventured back to ash-covered houses to collect important items before returning to shelters. Some rescued livestock while others carried household appliances such as televisions and refrigerators as the volcano spewed ash.

Visual observations of SemeruMonday morning showed less intense volcanic activity, but authorities warned of potential danger from lava flows that cooled after heavy rain.

“What worries us is sand mining, whichimportant for the region's economy. We want to make sure that there is no work being done on the route along which the hot ash cloud and cold lava are moving,” explained Abdul Mukhari.

On Sunday the alarm status whichindicates the danger of a volcanic eruption, raised to the highest level. It was previously the second largest after a major eruption in December last year.
