Philips 65OLED854 review: the best OLED TV of 2019

</ img>

Regular readers gg probably remember that the editors are closely following the development of OLED TVs with

the moment of their appearance on the market, rightly consideringtheir next technological step after LCD TVs with LED backlight. The difference between them is visible to the naked eye and is obvious to everyone. Philips TVs occupy a special place in the hearts of the editorial staff due to three things: Ambilight branded backlighting, the latest version of Android TV and attention to advanced technical settings for sound and image. At the beginning of this year, we won the Philips 55OLED803 model, which received the "editorial choice" award. But with the release of the 854 series, it seems we have a new favorite. It has version 9 of Android TV, with new features that we have already reviewed in a review of the very interesting Philips 50PUS7334 Performance series. And also a new, swivel stand, the design of which impressed not only the seasoned edition gg.

What is interesting TV Philips 65OLED854

Modern TVs are pretty sophisticateddevices that are gradually becoming connected to the Internet by multimedia centers of the whole house. In fact, they have long been full-fledged computers that solve the main problem - everything that is somehow connected with the output of music and video to the screen. These are television channels, movies with TV shows, and computer games (for which you no longer need a separate console, but need gamepads or joysticks), and just music from sources we are familiar with (you want to play from a flash drive or any other connected drive, you want to - with using the usual streaming service). The question of the near future is the management of smart home devices (lighting, climate control, the launch of vacuum cleaners and so on), but already today they have voice search capabilities and output, for example, weather forecasts or any information from Google search.

It makes no sense to paint in detail all of thesefeatures of this TV, so we will focus on the main ones. Firstly, this is an OLED TV with all its inherent advantages in the form of a very thin panel of a few millimeters (all the TV's electronics add extra centimeters of thickness to it), an unusually bright picture that is noticeably superior to any traditional LCD TV and does not differ in black color from the screen off (the pixels can physically turn off when reproducing black, which is analyzed by a powerful 4-core processor and smart image processing algorithms that represent the manufacturer’s know-how). Secondly, this TV is running the original Android TV system of the latest (today it’s 9) version and is guaranteed to be one of the first to receive its updates. Android TV is a version of Android specially adapted for large screens with high resolution and provides access to simple controls, Google voice search and a huge, unparalleled supermarket of games and applications, some of which can be used on a smartphone / tablet or TV, saving all user settings and game progress.

What's new in Philips 65OLED854 TV and how it differs from models of the 803 series

The main differences are in the updated versionAndroid TV (the TV immediately goes to version 9, while the 803 series at the beginning of the year had version 7) and a redesigned stand, which is a real engineering miracle that allows you to not only carry the weight of 28 kilograms, but also rotate the panel around the vertical axis. The manufacturer also abandoned the second, simplified remote control, apparently considering it to be redundant (in fact, finding two remotes in the house is more difficult than one). And he returned the ability to connect Bluetooth headphones and external speakers. With the new version of Android, there are several additional features that we have already discussed in the Philips 50PUS7334 review: new Ambilight modes, advanced image settings and, for example, the alarm mode.

Appearance of the Philips TV 65OLED854

Externally, all OLED TVs look like “thin”a panel with a connector module attached to it in some way and a stand. ” In this case, it’s both. On the wall, this TV looks great - the gap with the wall is only a few centimeters. But the design of this model was awarded the two most prestigious design awards - Red Dot 2019 and If Design 2019. There is a strong suspicion that all this is thanks to the stand.

This weighty (2.6 kilograms of cast metal) the stand consists of two parts and is attached to the TV with two bolts. Three more bolts hold her two parts together. It not only reliably holds the weight of a rather big TV, but also contains a rotation mechanism that allows (this is on the video) to deploy it. In general, I would give a design award for this stand alone, which allowed me to combine one long leg and a turning mechanism in such an incredibly compact form, but it seems that an international jury of designers did it without me. And this is another reason to love this TV.

Philips TV Connectors 65OLED854

For connections of everything, just two modules were made onback panel. They are also designed wisely. The bottom part contains connections that are done on an ongoing basis “once and for all”: Ethernet, a television antenna, connectors for two satellite tuners, component audio output, digital audio output and one (main) HDMI connector. The second module is located on the side - where it is easier to get close to it (for example, if the TV is hanging on the wall, this is not such an easy task due to the small gap between the panel and the wall). And here everything that can be easily connected and disconnected and connected for a while is connected to it: 2 USB ports (including “blue”, with USB 3.0 support), an audio output for headphones, a service connector used for diagnostics in service centers, 3 HDMI connector (each of them, by the way, supports HDCP 2.2, which allows you to watch licensed 4K content) and a connector for the cable provider’s CI card.

Controlling your Philips 65OLED854 TV

About the picture of OLED TVs already so muchIt is said that there is absolutely nothing to add. She is delightful and is today an advanced technology standard. But Philips engineers went even further and gave the user what we love - the ability to dig deeper into the settings of their own algorithms - those same software "improvements", each of which is a secret behind the seven seals of each TV manufacturer. We already considered all these settings in the review of the Philips 50PUS7334 Performance series, so I’ll just give screenshots of the TV menu to evaluate all the power and variety for those who want to dig deeper, for which I thank the creators of the TV. The heart of the system is the P5 Perfect Picture processor, which we already talked about, this manufacturer’s commercial shows how it works:

On the Internet you can find an interesting opinion, that OLED TVs are not suitable for games, they say the response time of the matrix is too high. It seems that it was taken directly from the encyclopedia of errors, published in ancient times, at the dawn of OLED panels. As I said before, on this Philips TV, all HDMI inputs support 4K resolution, and games on the console look the best! All amateurs to pin down on the console will be able to appreciate the high reaction speed of the matrix, and bottomless black and incredibly rich colors., And a smooth, clear picture. For complete happiness, you can even turn on the appropriate processing modes for sound and image. Now in large electronics stores there are demonstration zones with game consoles and if you wish, you can always see and evaluate the process with your own eyes (why take someone's word?).

How does the sound system of the Philips 65OLED854 TV sound

Like the Philips 55OLED803, the TVPhilips 65OLED854 two speakers with a power of 10 watts each and a subwoofer with a power of 30 watts. There is every reason to believe that Bowers & Wilkins also had a hand in them (they are too much alike, and both series in the manufacturer’s line are nearby), whose acoustics are on Philips older TVs of the 900th series. Batthey know noisily, and if you turn the TV toyourself back panel, you can see how its diffusers vibrate (this is also on the video). I no longer wondered at the sound of modern TVs many years ago and have long considered their power excessive (watching TV at full volume is not a pleasure for the faint of heart, you can really go deaf). The difference is rather whether there is a subwoofer, in this case it is there and copes with its task. And those who are not satisfied with the sound of the built-in speakers will probably already use their own speaker system to connect to the TV, which is already selected to their own taste.

</ img>

But as for the opportunities to influencesound settings (read: processing algorithms) - here the Philips TV also compares favorably with the products of competitors. Algorithms take into account the placement of the TV: on the stand or on the wall. Dolby Atmos enabled enables virtualization of surround sound. For the first time, I came across such an opportunity even in a Sony VAIO F laptop and 9 years ago it seemed like natural fiction: the sound from the laptop went so that I heard it somewhere behind my back. Today it does not look like rocket science, but the sensations of a certain technomagy still remain. And the Philips 65OLED854 TV allows you to change the sound using a 6-band equalizer. Not every TV, you see, can boast of such an opportunity. Let him at least three times be Smart TV. Special thanks for the ability to connect Bluetooth headphones. The function is not unique, and other manufacturers also have it (for example, Sony), but it's nice.

Philips TV remote control 65OLED854

The TV remote control is standard, its design is nothas been changing for several years. All you need to know about him is two-way, with a QWERTY keyboard on the back. It has a built-in microphone for voice commands and separate remote buttons for controlling Ambilight and launching Netflix. The keyboard is only in Latin, it is more useful for entering passwords in different services (although Android itself and the same Megogo have long had an authorization that does not require smart passwords - just go to the site and enter a few letters of code that appear on the TV screen). With voice input, such a keyboard is rarely useful, but there is a possibility, and this is good. Using it is more convenient and 2-3 times faster than typing from the on-screen keyboard.

Features Ambilight TV Philips 65OLED854

Despite the fact that the Ambilight backlightexists for many years, every time it does not cease to please. According to customer surveys, 4 out of 5 owners of Philips TVs can no longer imagine a TV without it. The backlight looks especially impressive when placed on the wall (do you, by the way, remember that for a long time the backlight takes into account the color of the wall, customizable in the menu?) And in the dark. Optically, the image of the already not small 65-inch panel increases even more. Here take a look at the screenshot below:

</ img>

Of the innovations, it is worth noting the backlight modes,Adapting to the sound of music or video, advanced control of brightness and saturation. You can turn on the backlight in only one of the RGB colors: in this case, it will only work with the saturation of red, blue or green. You can also turn on the flag mode of the country (for example, when watching sports events, gathering friends). Sometimes one wonders how such a simple thing as color highlighting can be so varied. And someone there in the development of televisions specifically comes up with all this.

TV alarm clock

In science fiction films, we have seen howa person of the future wakes up under the greeting of artificial intelligence, which not only gently wakes the character, but also gives a weather report and any information for the beginning of the day. In this TV, this is already a reality - the alarm function allows you to wake up in the morning to the selected melody with a given sound volume and to a smoothly appearing image with backlight. There are 10 themes to choose from, each of which will have new pictures in the chosen style: nature, architecture, street photography, space, sports. In conclusion, a weather summary is also shown. Everything is like a movie! That is, such a TV will be useful not only in the living room, but also in the bedroom.

Philips TV Neighbors 65OLED854

Together with a 65-inch Philips TV65OLED854, priced at 79,999 hryvnias, there is also a model with a diagonal of 55 inches - Philips 55OLED854 with a price tag of 55,999 hryvnias. There is a Philips 65OLED804 model, featuring a stand design (it uses an ordinary, dual stand without the possibility of a screen pivot). The Philips 65OLED754 model loses a little to it, which differs from the 804th series in another speaker system (2 speakers of 8 W each and a subwoofer of 24 W). A step below are the 7334-series televisions with diagonals of 43, 55, 65 and 70 inches, more about which can be found in our review.

Philips TV Competitors 65OLED854

If we consider a bunch of OLED + Android TV, asthe most preferable one when choosing a TV, then only Sony can compete with Philips, but prices start there from 74,999 hryvnias for a 55-inch model, which does not look attractive, given Philips’s great setup and Ambilight capabilities. Among OLED TVs, LG models look advantageous, but they have their own WebOS operating system - very decent, by the way, but its technical capabilities are inferior to Android TV, just look at the application store, which, compared to the Google ecosystem, looks frankly meager - You will not find truly spectacular games there, some casual ones. Plus, Android has a trump card for our latitudes - the ability to install applications from an apk file that instantly puts all competitors on the shoulder blades, including Samsung with their, of course, excellent QLED TVs that have all the same “drawbacks” (a proprietary operating system without the ability to install applications outside of its own market, and not as much a species variety of applications as Android).

Video review of the Philips 65OLED854 TV

Overview of this TV in one video:

In the dry residue

4k tv Philips 65OLED854 for todayday is the most profitable purchase of an OLED TV at the end of 2019. Firstly, the TV is not bought for 1-2 years, so it always makes sense to invest in a slightly larger diagonal (today 55 inches looks still interesting, after a couple of years it will already seem small - practice shows that TVs do not have too big diagonal) . Secondly, it runs Android TV - the most advanced operating system for TVs, offering users the maximum of capabilities that TVs of other brands cannot boast (the number of available applications and the ability to install any others are still the trump card of the system). Thirdly, Philips’s technological capabilities: Ambiligth's proprietary backlight (by golly, it’s already nagging at mentioning it, but there’s no way to put words out of the song) and settings for sound and image processing algorithms that lovers can dig deeper into adapting technology to their taste. If all of this is not enough, there is, and fourthly: this TV has the best price offer on the market, laying on the shoulder blades of competitors with similar technical capabilities. All this allows us with a clear conscience to issue our highest award for OLED TV for the second year in a row - "Editorial choice" for a Philips TV.
