Physicists confirm that they can solve the main problem of quantum computing

The authors of the new work from the Russian Quantum Center have created a new algorithm for the operation, which

used in all quantum algorithms - this is the Toffoli gate operation.

This is a universally controlledreversible valve with three inputs and outputs: it was invented by Thomas Toffoli in 1980. It has been proven that, using only this gate, it is possible to build any reversible logic circuit, for example, an arithmetic unit or a processor. It is also a popular quantum gate for building reversible circuits in quantum computers.

But the researchers used to implementoperations are not qubits, but another type of multi-level quantum systems - qutrits. They can be in three states at once. This way, quantum operations can be carried out faster and with better quality.

The circuit was demonstrated on a superconducting quantum computer. The results obtained will significantly accelerate the introduction of quantum computing in the industrial environment.

The idea of kudit quantum processors isis to use additional levels of physical systems to increase the quality of implementation of quantum operations and “more dense” encoding of quantum information. A superconducting quantum computer was chosen to demonstrate the circuit. In Russia, within the framework of the project of the Leading Research Center (LRC), work is underway to create a kudit quantum computer using ions
