Researchers at the University of Minnesota have discovered a new method for moving objects using
Tiny particles can be moved withlight and sound waves, similar experiments were carried out earlier. The problem is that for such manipulations, the size of the object must be smaller than the wavelength, the authors of the study explain. In their work, they have developed a technology that allows you to control larger objects.

For their demonstration, scientists usedmetamaterials. These are surfaces that are artificially created to interact with various waves. The researchers showed that if metamaterials are placed on the surface of an ordinary object, then it can be moved using ultrasound without touching it with your hands.
In their study, the researchers showed thatthe scattering properties of a metasurface can be turned into a driving force. By controlling the properties of the surface, it is possible to control movements regardless of the shape and size of the object.
Non-contact manipulation is a hot topicresearch in optics and electromagnetism, but this research offers an alternative non-contact control method that offers advantages that other methods may not have.
