A viable quantum internet is a network in which information stored in qubits is transmitted to large
In an article published in PRX Quantum, the teamscientists for the first time demonstrates stable long-distance teleportation of qubits, consisting of photons (light particles), with an accuracy of more than 90%. As a result of the experiment, the qubits were teleported over a fiber optic network 44 km long using modern single photon detectors, as well as standard equipment.
“We are delighted with theseresults,” said Panagiotis Spentsouris, director of Fermilab’s quantum science program and one of the paper’s co-authors. “This is a key achievement on the road to creating a technology that will change the way we think about global communication.”
The result was achieved in just a fewmonths after the US Department of Energy presented its plan for a national quantum Internet at a press conference at the University of Chicago.
Quantum teleportation is “incorporeal”transfer of quantum states from one place to another. Quantum qubit teleportation is achieved using quantum entanglement, in which two or more particles are inextricably linked to each other. If an entangled pair of particles is split between two separate locations, regardless of the distance between them, the encoded information is teleported.
