Pixel smartphones will learn to measure heart rate and respiratory rate using the camera

Google has announced useful new features in the Google Fit app coming next month.

What's new

First of all, this is a pulse measurement withoutsensors, as in wearable devices, and with the help of a camera and flash. To do this, you simply need to place your fingertip on the camera with the flash on. The system will then analyze your heart rate based on changes in light intensity in the capillaries.

In addition, with the help of a smartphone it will be possible to measure the breathing rate. To do this, the front camera will be used: just point it at yourself so that your head and chest fit into the frame.

“Although these measurements are not intended tomedical diagnosis or health assessment, we hope they can be useful for people using the Google Fit app to track and improve their daily well-being. After taking measurements, you can save them in the app to track trends over time along with other health information,” Google notes.

New Google Fit features will be coming to Pixel smartphones next month. There are also plans to distribute them to more Android devices.

By the way, there are many applications for measuring using this method in the App Store and Google Play. A similar feature was also present in older Samsung Galaxy models.
