PlayStation 5 is more energy-consuming than the latest Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics cards

Journalists from Notebook Check compared the new PlayStation 5 console with Nvidia GeForce RTX video cards in terms of energy consumption.

The authors compared performance andpower consumption of the console with laptops based on Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 3070 and 3060. To do this, the titles Astro Playroom and The Witcher 3 were launched on them in a resolution of 1080 pixels. Thus, it was found that in standby mode the set-top box consumes about 47 W, while the flagship video card – maximum 33 W.

In addition, the console outperformed its opponents in games. Thus, the PlayStation 5 consumed 180-200 W versus 187 W, which was consumed by a laptop based on the GeForce RTX 3070.

"PS5 power consumption is surprising not becauseof how high it can be, and because of how close it is to the fastest gaming laptops currently available at retail, it's at least 5 times the price of a console. That's a lot of power per dollar that console gamers of this generation are getting." the authors concluded.
