This same “drift” is caused by two components.A potentiometer is a three-pin resistor with a sliding or rotating contact that allows the joystick to move freely and sense those rotations. The problem is that over time, abrasions and scratches appear on these contacts, which disrupt the signal. In addition, the spring-loaded mechanism that returns the joystick to its original position begins to stretch and deform over time.

Together, these two problems create the very “drift” that spoils the gaming experience for gamers on PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox.

Taking the average “skating rink” as a basisin Call of Duty: Warzone, iFixit found that the joysticks of the PlayStation 5 gamepad will last approximately 417 hours of play. VGC also calculated that if a player uses their controller for two hours a day, the gamepad will last about 7 months.
