The San Francisco City Council voted by majority to approve the use of robots.
The decision was made after a lively discussionbetween supporters and opponents of innovation. The main argument against is the militarization of the police and the increase in the number of violations against the poor and minorities.
The San Francisco Police Department stated thatcurrently they do not have armed robots and their purchase is not planned. But once the law is passed, police will be able to use remote-controlled robots armed with explosives "to contact, incapacitate or disorientate violent, armed or dangerous suspects" when lives are at stake, police officials said in a statement.
Currently with the San Francisco Police12 functioning ground robots are used. They are used to check explosive objects or surveillance in conditions of poor visibility, the department said. Until now, they have never been used to deliver explosive devices.
Permission from local authorities for potentialthe use of robots was required due to a new law passed in the state of California. It requires police and sheriffs to inventory military equipment and obtain permission to use it.
