Previously unknown species of box jellyfish found in nature reserve

A team of scientists from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has discovered a new species

Box jellyfish in the Mai Po Nature Reserve in Hong Kong. The research team named the new jellyfish species Tripedalia maipoensis. A new species of box jellyfish was first discovered in the waters of China.

The research group was headed by ProfessorQiu Jianwen, Professor, Department of Biology, HKBU. Over the summer of 2020 to 2022, with collaborators from WWF-Hong Kong, Ocean Park Hong Kong and the University of Manchester, the team collected jellyfish samples from a brackish shrimp pond at Mai Po Nature Reserve. They discovered that the samples belonged to a new species.

“We named the new species Tripedalia maipoensis,to mention the place where a new species was first discovered. Although it is currently only known in May Po, we believe that this species is also common in the adjacent waters of the Pearl River Estuary,” explains Professor Qiu.
