Android Introduces New Secure Sandbox for Machine Learning Data

Today Google announced

Several new privacy measures, including a new section in Android for more secure management of machine learning data.

New Android Private Computing Core -Private Compute Core - Will be a privileged space in the operating system. Instead of credentials, it will store data for use in machine learning. This is data that is used by the Smart Reply or Now Playing text message feature to identify songs.

Although none of the functions are in themselvesconfidential, both of them use confidential data - like personal texts and audio in real time. The partition will make it easier for the operating system to protect this data, while maintaining accessibility to system-level functions.

Despite the name, Android Private ComputeCore is not a separate hardware chip; The section exists entirely programmatically. While this reduces the absolute level of data protection, it makes it easier to deploy the system across a variety of devices.

New system announced along with othersprivacy features for Android, including a privacy dashboard and a setting for approximate location sharing.
