Quantum computer connected for the first time to the most powerful supercomputer in Europe

Researchers from the Finnish technical institute VTT conducted experiments connected a quantum computerwith

They just wanted to find out what would happen if you combined two of today's most powerful computing tools.

They combined Helmi, a quantum computersystem, with the Lumi supercomputer, which is located in the CSC data center in Kajaani. Lumi now ranks third among the most powerful supercomputers in the world and is the most powerful in Europe.

The research project aims to explore the application of quantum computing to accelerate workloads, quantum algorithms and software.

The researchers wanted to imagine a world in whichquantum systems work in conjunction with supercomputers to reduce the time it takes to complete simulations without losing accuracy. The system can be used to predict weather and rapidly changing weather events such as hurricanes or tsunamis.

“Now Lumi is the most powerful in the worldsupercomputing infrastructure with quantum computing — Pekka Manninen, the director of Lumi noted. “This means we have all the drivers of the future of computing that are seamlessly integrated and ready to go.”

Compared to quantum systems suchcompanies like D-Wave and IBM, VTT's Helmi system is not very large - it consists of only five qubits. VTT is currently working on 20 and 50 qubit systems, scheduled for 2024. IBM has already launched the Eagle system with 127 qubits in 2021 and will introduce a system with 4158 qubits in 2025.

“With this initiative, we are laying the foundation for the futurelarge-scale quantum computing infrastructure in Finland, the researchers added. “The first generation of quantum computers will be the most valuable for teaching researchers and students about quantum algorithms and computing, as well as related technologies.”
