Review of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: galloping through parallel universes

Game Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart turned out exactly as expected. This is an expensive gaming blockbuster for everyone

family with a very beautiful picture, excellenttechnical execution and excellent staging. The game looks and sounds like a modern animated film, in which we also control the characters. The gameplay remained as dynamic and exciting as in previous parts, while some new elements for the series were added to it. The arsenal of intricate, sometimes strange weapons has become even larger, and thanks to DualSense, shooting them has become even more fun. Insomniac turned out to be an excellent PS5 exclusive in the best sense of the term. But let's be honest: there was no revolution and at its core, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart uses the same familiar mechanics as in previous installments. There are minimal innovations. Yes, and the decision to refresh the series with new characters is commendable, but for some reason the gameplay of Ratchet and Rivet are not different at all.

Old friends and guests from parallel worlds

Ratchet & Clank is a popular seriesexclusive games for the PlayStation (although there were two games for mobile phones), which have been released since back in 2002. Rift Apart is the fourteenth game in the series. The 2016 game was a remake of the first game from 2002. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a completely original, independent game with a new plot. The game takes place after the events of Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus 2013. But, according to the developers, Rift Apart (or Through Worlds in localization) is a completely independent work and will appeal to players who are not familiar with previous games.

Considering the age rating 7+ (in somecountries 6+), don't expect any complicated story. Everything is as usual as possible: there is a main villain who is trying to destroy all living things. And we, as the main characters, have to stop him. After the events of the previous parts, Ratchet and Clank have become quite famous personalities and the game begins with an event in their honor. The local villain interrupts him. In Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart becomes Dr. Nefarious, who is trying to completely exterminate all organic life forms in the universe and all dimensions. Which he can navigate thanks to a collapse caused by a malfunctioning device called the “Meter” (translated literally, but it doesn’t sound the best), in the original - Dimensionator. With his help, Ratchet hoped to find other members of his Lombax race.

As a result of the device's destruction, Ratchetends up in an alternative dimension, where, by chance, he breaks up with the robot Clank. And at the same time he meets the Lombax girl Rivet. This universe has its own, even more dangerous version of Nefarious, who became emperor. The heroes will have to join forces to cope with both Dr. Nefarious from Ratchet’s home dimension and Emperor Nefarious from the Rivet dimension. In Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Rivet has become a full-fledged playable hero. As you progress, her story unfolds. In particular, how and where she lost her arm, instead of which a mechanical one was installed. And it’s worth noting that there’s really a lot of playing time for Rivet. In fact, Rivet is an alternate version of Ratchet. And Klenk has an alternative version in Keith.

Of course, this is all served with an abundance of humor andself-irony. During the entire game, there are no periods of sagging or protracted plot. The pace of the narrative is maintained, and the gameplay pieces are intelligently alternated with cut-scenes. And all this in terms of the level of performance looks like some kind of high-budget CGI animated film from Pixar.

What about the gameplay, combat system and game worlds?

There's a lot to explore in the game.various planets, as well as their alternatives from parallel universes. Some planets have already been encountered in previous games in the series, some are completely new. They all look very picturesque. And despite the fact that, in general, the game is linear, the locations are vast and there is no feeling of “corridority.” and there is something to explore after completing the main task. Of course, movements between planets and dimensions are “seamless”, without any downloads. Moreover, some gameplay episodes are based on instant transitions between dimensions. For example, in order to move further along the location to the desired point, you periodically have to move back and forth between dimensions several times. Also in some locations you can find small “pocket” measurements. You can get some interesting bonus from them. For example, unique armor.

At the heart of Ratchet & Clank:Rift Apart still has the same fast and dynamic gameplay as in previous parts. This is still the same third-person action platformer. With an abundance of enemies, bosses, breakable boxes and so on. To the basic mechanics, they added running along some walls, a “phantom dash” for dodging shots and overcoming certain obstacles, as well as spatial rifts, with the help of which you can quickly “pull up” to another part of the location. Combining all these elements allows you to effectively deal with a large number of enemies. At some points, complete chaos begins to happen on the screen: a bunch of enemies, charges flying at the main character from all sides, and handfuls of bolts falling out of defeated enemies. Given the overall high speed of battles, you have to move constantly and very quickly.

In addition to this, there is the opportunity to ridejet boots, rails. And in some locations there are representatives of the fauna that you can ride. Throughout the game, all these elements are intelligently combined and you never get bored. The dynamics of the game do not drop. Series Ratchet & Clank has always been famous for its abundance of variety, sometimes very strange. Rocket launchers, homing saws, lightning bolts, mushrooms (!), grenades and a lot more. All these weapons feel different, shooting is done at a very high level. It brings aesthetic pleasure, including thanks to the capabilities of DualSense. The gamepad behaves differently with each weapon. Although, it is worth noting that I still “didn’t understand”a couple of types of weapons. in terms of their effectiveness.

But on shooting, platforming and crate smashingthe game doesn't end. In Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart added puzzles. In some, Klenk will have to guide running robots through a kind of “obstacle course” in a virtual dimension. The second type of puzzle is to free an infected computer from a virus. It looks like this: a miniature spider robot runs through microcircuits and shoots at those same viruses. These puzzles add variety to an already mechanic-rich game. And someone will definitely like them. Out of interest, I went through the first few, but quickly got bored and skipped them further. Fortunately this is allowed. In general, thanks to the abundance of different mechanics and the overall high pace, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is very cheerful. But, we must admit, there are no cardinal innovations and we have known all these mechanics well for a long time.

What about resources and pumping?

The pumping system is made extremely simple.Experience accumulates and, with each new level, the main character's health increases. In addition, there is a separate level of proficiency for each specific type of weapon. The developers decided not to complicate life for the players and made these indicators, and at the same time all purchased weapons with upgrades, common to Ratchet and Rivet. This again reminds us that Ratchet and Rivet are alternate versions of each other. Each type of weapon can be purchased and upgraded from sellers in certain locations. Collected bolts are used as currency. And to upgrade weapons you need Raritanium crystals.

Sets of armor are to be found on planets and to collect sets. The assembled complete set gives additional protection bonuses. In fact, the entire pumping system ends on these elements.

How does all this look, sound and optimized?

Insomniac Games studio has already shown in the pastexclusive Spider Man: Miles Morales, which knows how to create beauty and use the capabilities of the new PlayStation 5 console to the fullest. Apparently, in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart uses developments from “spider”. The game has similar three performance modes: quality (maximum resolution, settings and ray tracing), performance (60 fps, no RT) and RT performance (60 fps, RT, but lower resolution). The studio does not give exact figures for resolution in each mode; this will be handled by the craftsmen from Digital Foundry. The main part of the game was completed in quality mode. But what I liked the most was the RT Performance mode: 60 frames per second is always much more comfortable than 30. At the same time, there is no significant deterioration in picture quality. The game looks great in this mode on a 4K HDR TV.

Ratchet & Clank:Rift Apart has retained its recognizable style. But technically it is significantly superior to the remake of Ratchet & Clank 2016. Both in terms of the overall picture and the quality of animations, detail and smoothness. First of all, this applies to modes with 60 FPS, of course. I was very pleased with the overall technical condition of the game: no noticeable FPS drops. Even before the day 1 patch. There were a couple of minor bugs, but they were not critical.

As mentioned above, the mechanics themselvesJumping between dimensions was implemented thanks to a fast SSD. The game actually completely lacks loading screens, both in the game itself and when starting and loading a save. As befits a PlayStation 5 exclusive, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart actively uses the capabilities of the DualSense gamepad. Uses advanced vibration feedback for literally everything. From footsteps, interactions with various surfaces, to the moment when the character uses the keyboard in the game. Triggers are actively used to convey the characteristics of weapons, of which there are a lot in the game. Similar to the recent Returnal exclusive, pressing the trigger halfway will activate one shooting mode, and pressing the trigger fully will activate another.

Mark is responsible for the game's soundtrackMothersbaugh, the founder of the New Wave group Devo and a composer who has already worked in both cinema (in particular, Thor: Ragnarok) and games. His works include several parts of Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Interstate ’82 and Skate 3. The soundtrack turned out to be very cheerful and in some epic moments it is very reminiscent of the musical design of Star Wars. The soundtrack is quite suitable for what is happening in the game. Localization Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart complete: text and sound. Quality-wise: it could have been better. But in general, localization is quite adequate and fulfills the main task. If desired, you can include the original voice acting and text localization. As for 3D sound, everything sounds really three-dimensional and believable in the headphones, and sound sources are perfectly localized.

The bottom line is. Three things to know about Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

 • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay is still the same dynamic, fun action/platformer.
 • The plot is simple and spiced with an abundance of light humor, so the game is suitable for the whole family.
 • The game looks great and has no downloads at all.
