A reason to take a walk in the midst of an epidemic: The Witcher Monster Slayer developers about the creation of the game

Last week, developers from Spokko announced the AR game The Witcher Monster Slayer. The developers even showed

gameplay, and now the Noclip channel has released a documentary about the development of the project.

How the Witcher Monster Slayer was created

Developers from Spoko decided to make an AR gamesince the release of Ingres, and thought it would be cool to release a similar project based on the Warcraft universe. Still, CD Projekt is geographically closer, and the developers decided to take on the Witcher universe. Over the course of six months, the team put together a prototype based on a quest from Witcher 3 and showed it to the company.

The first challenge for Spoko was to create believable characters that would look just as good as they did in the older version of the game.

“It’s one thing to look at abstract furrymonsters that you know from the Pokemon universe, because you cannot become attached to them because of their appearance. When you have a story about a guy talking about his family being stuck in a wagon attacked by neckers, it has to be believable and that's the real challenge when making a game for smartphones,” says technical director Rafl Staszewski.

As the developers explain, The Witcher MonsterSlayer stands on two pillars: Pokemon Go-style monster hunting and optional story-driven adventures. For the first one, the developers even introduced witcher vision, which allows you to scan the area for the presence of monsters.

The story missions also had to be adapted.Firstly, the dialogues were shortened so that users did not stand with their phones raised for five minutes. Secondly, players will have to cover real distances when completing tasks. To prevent these trips from seeming boring, the developers will regularly add activities along the way to the goal.

The developers are not yet sure whether it’s goodThe Witcher fans will react, but they assure that this is not the same as what happened with Diablo Immortal. While Blizzard is trying to bring the gameplay of the original to smartphones, Spokko is creating a gameplay experience that is only possible on mobile devices. That's why The Witcher Monster Slayer is more than just another phone game.

The developers also understand that now is not the best time to release an AR game, but The Witcher Monster Slayer is aimed at single playthrough, so you can play away from people.
