Replacement for Android and iOS: what's interesting about the operating system Harmony OS

Harmony OS is an Android application compatible operating system developed by Huawei since 2012.

Full development of HarmonyOS began in May 2016.

Presumably, EMUI 11 will be based on Harmony OS.

In a published interview with the newspaper Die Welt, it is argued that this operating system can be used as plan B, in case of US restrictions on the use of Android or Windows, but for now the company prefers to work with Google and Microsoft.

The operating system is designed forsmart devices such as smart TVs and was used as a mobile operating system. It is expected to become a free, open source microkernel-based distributed operating system.

In April 2021Huawei has released an official statement that the HarmonyOS operating system is not a replacement for Android or iOS. This is a completely new operating system, according to Huawei representatives.

How Harmony OS works

The HarmonyOS microkernel is only responsible for executingbasic services such as flow scheduling. Unlike Android, which has over 100 million lines of code, the HarmonyOS architecture contains just 20 million lines of code. Huawei immediately assures that due to the small amount of code, the probability of detecting vulnerabilities and successful cyber attacks is minimal.

HarmonyOS uses a secure runtime(Trusted Execution Environment) and a modular layered architecture that allows flexible deployment of the platform on various types of devices and in the widest range of scenarios.

According to Huawei, its operating systemcan be installed in smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers, TVs, wearable electronics, smart speakers, smart home, internet of things, cars and other equipment, and most importantly - work between them completely seamlessly.

What devices does Harmony OS run on?

First, Harmony OS will be installed on all Huawei products. Secondly, it will be provided on select devices from partners.

For example, by June 2, 2021, Harmony OS will already receive the following devices:

  • Huawei Mate 40 series;
  • Huawei P40 series;
  • Huawei Mate 30 series;
  • Huawei Mate Pad Pro.

Why Harmony OS was created

It was created to have a fallback onloss of access to the Android ecosystem from Google. The US government's decision to blacklist China's largest tech company over national security threats has rocked the global marketplace.

This was followed by a trade ban.for American suppliers, which is still relevant today. Restrictions prohibit US companies from supplying US-made equipment to Huawei in the absence of appropriate licenses.

At the end of August 2019, Huawei receivedextension of the deferral from sanctions for another 90 days, until November 19. Until then, the company can purchase US goods to support existing networks and provide smartphone software updates.

Asked what will happen after November, US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said that "everyone was warned in advance of the consequences, there has already been a lot of discussion."

He probably didn’t want to waste time in anotherjust to remind that Google, Microsoft, Intel, ARM, Qualcomm, Broadcom and other players of the American market will finally stop cooperating with Huawei. In total, the blacklist includes more than 100 divisions and subsidiaries of Huawei.

Android and Harmony

The new OS is compatible with Android software.It is believed that Harmony OS is just a fork (fork) of the Google OS. Huawei has never hidden that it was operating on the Android open source code. But the base was significantly rebuilt and improved.

Harmony OS tablet supports third-party software:you can install the APK file of a familiar Android program on it. However, there is a limitation: Google services will not work fully. For example, many games use Play Games to save progress.

In general, Huawei has already prepared its own versionGoogle Mobile Services (GMS) - it's called Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). The CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Unit, Richard Yu, noted that HMS is ready to roll out and will seamlessly replace Google's popular Android apps. As an analogue of Google Play, the Huawei AppGallery store is integrated into HarmonyOS for smartphones by default.

Features of the Harmony OS interface

The new OS has a dock bar associated with multitasking: you can display several active windows, and switching between running software is almost instantaneous.

Also OS supports Device + function,assuming the creation of a super remote control from the device to control equipment. True, it has not yet been possible to try this - there are still very few compatible devices on the market.

Updated Huawei Share function.By connecting the device to a laptop with one touch of the label on the case, you can move files, control the tablet from the computer screen, or expand the display of the latter. There is only one problem with the option - it works only with Huawei laptops.

Conclusion

Peter Gauden, Huawei's senior global product manager, believes the current operating systems are "functionally isolated."

He noted that Huawei's goal is toto help the devices we all use - from TVs and fitness bracelets to smart speakers and smartphones - to communicate effectively with each other.

In an interview with Digital Trends, Gouden stated,that this is why HarmonyOS was created - "the unified operating system of the future", providing "a seamless life of artificial intelligence" and "free interaction regardless of the device."
