Replika AI bot users turned off “adult mode”: people fell into depression

As Know Your Meme notes, the removal of the “adult” mode in Replika not only caused heated discussion on the network, but also

many users say it has given them life-threatening suicidal thoughts.

Recently, many have been struck by a strangethe chatbot's turn from its original billing as an "artificial intelligence companion" to the service's premium offering: the ability to send sex messages and even exchange obscene images with the bot, which seemed to be trying to sway even those with the free version without such an opportunity.

"Replika is a safe space for friendshipand communication. We do not offer sexual interactions and will never do so, a spokesman for Replika said. “We are constantly making changes to the app to improve interaction and communication, as well as to make people feel safe and receive support.”

However, the company's decision resulted inhundreds, if not thousands of users have lost the interlocutor with whom they sexted. Moreover, the reaction turned out to be so serious that company representatives had to attach contacts to hotlines and suicide prevention services on their pages.

"This is a story about a company that doesn't careon the impact that sudden changes in people's escape from loneliness can have," wrote one user, "on their ability to explore their own intimacy."
