Research: 20 companies generate 55% of the world's plastic waste

20 companies produce more than half of the world's single-use plastic waste. The researchers note that

According to a new comprehensive analysis, amongThe global companies responsible for 55% of the world's plastic packaging waste are both government and multinational corporations, including oil and gas giants and chemical companies.

New index "Producers of plastic waste"first showed companies making the polymers from which plastic products are made, from medical masks to plastic bags and bottles that, at the end of their short lives, pollute oceans, are burned or thrown into landfills.

Australia tops the list of countries with the most disposable plastic waste per capita, ahead of the US, South Korea and the UK.

ExxonMobil is the largest manufacturerdisposable plastic waste in the world - they are responsible for 5.9 million tons of plastic. This is stated in an analysis conducted by the Australian Minderoo Foundation with partners including Wood Mackenzie, the London School of Economics and the Stockholm Environment Institute. The world's largest US-based chemical company, Dow, generated 5.5 million tonnes of plastic waste, while the Chinese oil and gas company Sinopec generated 5.3 million tonnes.

11 of these companies are located in Asia, four -in Europe, three in North America, one in Latin America and one in the Middle East. Their plastic production is funded by leading banks, the main ones being Barclays, HSBC, Bank of America, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase.
