Research: The disappeared continent was larger than previously thought.

Researchers were analyzing diamond rock they found on Baffin Island. Among them

samples randomly turned out to be residualsThe North Atlantic Craton is an ancient continent that broke apart 150 million years ago. They identified it by comparing its mineral composition with craton fragments that researchers had found before.

“For researchers, kimberlites are likeunderground rockets that pick up passengers on their way to the earth's surface. In this case, the passengers were solid pieces of rock containing many details about the conditions deep below the earth’s surface of our planet, which changed over time, ”explained Maya Kopylova, a geologist at British Columbia University.

Farmers created pipe traps for soybean aphids to save their crops

Kopylova and her colleagues were able to find on the samplea sign of a mineral that coincided with other parts of the craton. “Finding these lost pieces is similar to how we select the missing piece of the puzzle,” Kopylova said.

Thus, scientists have reason to say that the North Atlantic Craton extended much further. A new find shows that its size is about 10% larger than is commonly believed now.

North Atlantic Craton or Canadianthe platform forms the basis of the North American continent, as well as Greenland and Scotland. “Our knowledge of the lost continent literally and symbolically has become deeper,” the researchers note.
