Research: what problems prevent the creation of new digital products in Russia

During the analysis, the team interviewed 136 heads of development departments and IT directors of the Russian

enterprise business in order to highlight the needs of corporations for DevOps tools and to determine the degree of influence of the import substitution policy on the use of the approach.

The study confirms that the speedThe amount of work development teams must do today has increased significantly: a third of companies launch new services weekly, 32% develop software solutions containing from 20 to 100 services simultaneously, and over 60% of study participants work on ten IT products at the same time.

The departure of Western vendors and the needthe creation of additional applications taking into account the goals of import substitution led to a slowdown in the development process—this problem was noted by 22% of developers.

The top five difficulties also included chaoticrequirements gathering (16%), increased manual processes (16%), lack of documentation practices (14%) and outdated infrastructure (10%).

In turn, CIOs namedThe key business challenges are the significant cost of specialists (54%), the lack of developers (50%) and the high share of legacy applications (46%). Thus, despite the widespread opinion about the personnel surplus in the Russian IT market, half of the respondents noted a shortage of specialists with expertise in development.

In addition to problem analysis, the researchers also identified key technology trends:
— 90% of companies continue to usecommercial development tools from foreign suppliers. However, they mostly combine them with products from Russian vendors or tools of their own design.
— A third of companies consider safety a prioritysoftware product at all stages of design, development and production, which implies close interaction between the security team and DevOps.
— Most companies (56%) use opensoftware is open source. At the same time, the surveyed businesses practically do not interact with the open source community or interact minimally: a third publish their own code in the public domain, and only 9% financially support individual solutions.

Cloud services in the process of developmentallow you to optimize computing power and bring products to market many times faster. However, slightly less than half (49%) of Russian enterprise businesses do not use the tool due to issues with the information security of such solutions and their inconsistency with corporate policy.

The DevOps ideology traditionally includesnot only technological features and tools, but cultural approaches and behavioural trends. Creating the necessary development culture in companies is assessed by all respondents as one of the most important factors that manifests itself at all stages of development. At the same time, CIOs emphasize the importance of thinking in the startup paradigm, which includes the ability to act quickly and flexibly, as well as work in a single information field and establish communication with the end user of the software product.

According to the report, 66% of companies are establishingsharing knowledge and best practices within the development team with business customers. In addition, respondents note that the spread of DevOps practices helps attract and retain IT professionals.

“As shown by in-depth interviews with participantsmarket, the cultural conflict between the corporate system and startup approaches to development is the main factor slowing down the speed of software creation. Maintaining a high pace of bringing products to market is only possible through the transition to DevOps methodology. Another success factor lies in high-quality IT4IT tools, which in terms of functionality and convenience are not inferior to previously popular solutions. This is the basis for the qualitative transformation that is already underway in our market. This was shown by our initially internal research, which we decided to make public. We plan that T1 Group will annually provide an expert overview of the market, thus making a contribution to the development of the DevOps community in Russia,” noted Kirill Bulgakov, First Deputy General Director of T1 Group.
