Researchers first created metallic water in terrestrial conditions

The researchers explained that pure water is a poor conductor of electricity. To do this, the liquid must

contain other elements - for example, dissolved salts, but the conductivity of such an electrolyte will still remain low. Researchers from the Czech Academy of Sciences have set themselves the task of making water as electrically conductive as copper wire. Previously it was believed that it was impossible to do this under Earth conditions. However, scientists were able to achieve this - metallic water retained its properties for several seconds.

Scientists have developed a new method that allowedthey do not use high pressure to make metallic water. It is based on the behavior of alkali metals in water and liquid ammonia. Inspired by working with solutions of alkali metals in liquid ammonia, which behave like a metal at high concentrations, the researchers decided to create a conduction band not by compressing water molecules, but by massively dissolving electrons released from the alkali metal. However, in doing so, they had to overcome a fundamental obstacle: when they enter the water, alkali metals immediately explode.

Scientists have found a connection between the ratio of uranium isotopes in water and its salinity

Therefore, scientists worked in a vacuum chamber, wherethey exposed a drop of sodium-potassium composition to a small amount of water vapor, which began to condense on its surface. The electrons released from the alkali metal dissolved in the water layer on the surface faster than the chemical reaction that leads to the explosion occurs. There were enough of them to overcome the critical limit for the formation of a conduction band, and thus a metallic aqueous solution was created, which, in addition to electrons, also contained dissolved alkali metal cations and chemically formed hydroxide and hydrogen.

“Thanks to this, we managed to create a thin layeran aqueous solution of a metallic color, which lasted for several seconds. This was enough for us not only to see it with our own eyes, but also to measure it with the help of spectrometers, ”the scientists noted.
