Researchers have developed electronic sensors that mimic the pain threshold

Research team of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology led by Chung Ho Yoon and Chong-Yun

Kanga created a semiconductor that canimitate the reaction of human skin to external stimuli. An electronic device regulates the electrical signal depending on the strength and danger of external influence. For control, scientists use silver particles.

According to the researchers, the inclusion in the materiala small number of silver atoms leads to the formation of weakly conductive nano-sized filaments. The electrical circuit formed by such filaments quickly opens with the release of heat. If a large number of silver particles are included in the material, then the electrical circuit formed by such particles is stable.

Scientists have used this feature of silver indeveloping his device, depending on the strength of stimulation, a different amount of silver particles is fed into the sensor. In case of prolonged exposure to a weak stimulus, the electrical current in the system decreases over time, mimicking adaptation. However, when exposed to a strong stimulus, strong electrical signals are generated that cause pain.

“The significance of this study lies in the fact thatthat in addition to the ability of electronic devices to mimic pain, they can easily adapt to weak stimuli that are harmless to the human body,” notes Chong-Yun Kang.

Scientists believe that their development will help in the creation of artificial skin, internal organs and humanoid robots.
