The study was organized and supervised by the Moscow branch of the Dutch contract
In the third stage of the trial, 19,866 volunteers took part, they were vaccinated and examined at 25 hospitals and clinics in Moscow. Of the testers, 14,964 received the vaccine, 4902 received a placebo.
In the vaccine group, 16 people fell ill (0.1%), inplacebo group - 62 people (1.3%). Thus, the efficiency was 91.6% (95%, confidence interval 85.6–95.2). As a result of the tests, there were 78 confirmed cases of coronavirus.
An important piece of the research was the participationvolunteers over 60 years old (the oldest participant in the vaccine group was 87 years old, and 84 years old in the placebo group). More than 98% of the volunteers in the vaccine group developed a humoral immune response and 100% developed a cellular immune response.
During the trials, four deaths were recorded: three among the vaccinated and one in the placebo group, but none of them, according to the report, were associated with vaccination.
RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev notes thatthe vaccine "fully protects against severe cases of coronavirus, according to data compiled and evaluated by independent experts and published in The Lancet."
However, it is still unknown how longThe immunity obtained through vaccination is effective. More research is required on various subgroups: various concomitant diseases, pregnant women, lactating women, children.
In addition, it is unknown how effectiveThe vaccine does a good job of preventing asymptomatic cases: this is needed to fight the pandemic, not just the severe form of the disease. And, most importantly, there is no data on how effective the vaccine is against mutations of the new type of coronavirus.
