Samsung has officially unveiled its new Galaxy S20 series (Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus review), and the Galaxy S20 Ultra has also been announced.
Galaxy S20 Ultra
This new Galaxy flagship — this is beforeJust a completely new camera system that takes mobile photography to the next level. The camera system on the back is absolutely gigantic, featuring a new 108-megapixel sensor for the main camera for the first time on a Samsung phone, as well as a periscope zoom camera that allows for 10x hybrid optical zoom.
Of course, the camera — that's not all it isnew: display now supports 120Hz refresh rate for extra smooth performance; The battery has a capacity of 5,000 mAh, which provides long battery life, and in countries where a 5G network already exists, Samsung will offer support for this faster network.
Here's a quick overview …
Specifications, Comparison
Design and size
Probably the most striking feature of the Galaxy S20Ultra— it's just the size of this phone. It's not just a big phone, it's gigantic! The screen is 6.9 inches and the phone is much larger than last year's S10 Plus. If you prefer compact phones, you'll definitely want to consider the smaller S20 and S20 Plus, but if you want a big phone with a big screen, you'll love the Ultra.
It is made of glass and metal (glass is faststained with fingerprints), there is nothing new here, but it still looks as luxurious as one would expect. The novelty is presented in only two colors: gray and black. The playful pink and blue options that you have on the other two S20 phones are not available here.
The S20 Ultra also does not have the usual 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Display
S20 Ultra — this is a big phone with a big6.9-inch screen with tiny bezels and a cutout with the front camera in the center. This screen looks incredible. This is AMOLED in its latest and most advanced form with rich and delightful colors, deep blacks and great viewing angles. This is truly impressive.
New feature — this is the refresh rate120 Hz. At 120Hz, everything looks buttery smooth, and this refresh rate works at lower brightness levels, Samsung says. Note that you can only enable it when using Full HD resolution. If you want the maximum Quad HD resolution, 120 hertz is not available.
Camera
Enjoy the new S20 Ultra in personcomparable to culture shock. You've definitely never seen a phone with such a massive rear camera. We've already mentioned two reasons for this size: the new 108MP main camera with the largest sensor on a Galaxy phone, and then three more cameras: an ultra-wide, ultra-wide DepthVision camera and a new periscope zoom lens on the bottom that gives you an impressive 10x optical zoom , so you can zoom in without losing clarity
It can increase digital zoom up toan incredible 100 times, well deserving of the Space Zoom nickname Samsung gave it. Of course, don't expect great quality at 100x zoom, images look blurry, plus you'll want to take a tripod with you. And if you switch to the native 10x zoom, the photos look absolutely impressive.
Let's briefly review the characteristics of the camera:
- 108-megapixel main camera, f / 1.8 aperture, OIS
- 12-megapixel ultra-wide, f / 2.2
- 48-megapixel telephoto, f / 3.5, OIS
- DepthVision (ToF)
- 40 megapixel front camera
These 108 megapixels on the main camera can be used for full-resolution photos, but by default the camera combines 9 separate pixels into one to create 12 megapixels.
New camera features
And here is a brief overview of all the new features that you will find in the camera app:
- Single take lets you just keep the shuttercameras, while the phone will take photos and videos with all cameras, and then magically shoot the best shots and moments in one album. Do something fun, jump or scream, be creative and capture it. You will automatically receive a short film, several GIF-style pictures, such as funny animations, a bunch of stylized photos and much more in just one take. Samsung says it uses AI, but it's a really great way to capture the moment and see it as if captured from a crowd of people, each with their own unique look.
- Night mode 2.0: Night mode has also been improved in the S20 Ultra, and now it gives more light and color in almost black conditions. The improvement is quite significant compared to what is currently available on the Note 10 and Galaxy S10 series.
- Night Hyperlapse. Hyperlapse — this is a type of video that speeds up time and can be very effective. Now with a larger sensor, you can make it very clean and silent.
- 8K video — this is a leading new featurecamera that provides an amazing amount of detail. This isn't the default option (probably because 8K video takes up a lot of space), but if you want this feature you can use it, plus in 8K video you can also capture 33MP stills while recording. You can share 8K videos on YouTube or stream them to a compatible 8K Samsung TV, and you also have the option to downgrade your footage to a lower resolution when sending it to friends.
- Enhanced Super Steady Feature: Super Steady option (you can enable it by clicking on the wavy hand icon in the camera interface) automatically eliminates noise and trembling in your videos, and it's cool when you try to shoot something sporty or active where you have to run with the camera . Samsung says both AI and hardware improvements were used for this. Keep in mind that Super Steady uses an ultra-wide camera with significant framing rather than the main camera.
- Pro Mode for video gives you manual control of things like shutter speed and ISO, so you can adjust the brightness of the video in the same way as on a DSLR camera.
CPU, 5G and memory
All three Galaxy S20 phones will receive the new Snapdragon 865 processor in the US, while most of the other regions will receive them based on Samsung's Exynos 990 chip.
5G network connectivity is also available.optional for all three models, including Ultra, but keep in mind that in some markets where there is no 5G network, only 4G phone versions are likely to be available, which will also help Samsung lower the price of these devices.
If you are interested in what type of 5G networks the phone will support, you will be glad to know that it will include support for both mmWave technology and Sub6 ranges.
In terms of storage, the base version of the S20 Ultra will have 128 GB of internal memory.
Battery and Charging
S20 Ultra comes with a massive batterywith a capacity of 5000 mAh, which provides a sufficient amount of charge even with high requirements for a 5G network and a 120 Hz screen. This is the largest battery Samsung has ever installed on a flagship smartphone.
As for charging, the phone comes withFast Charge wall adapter with a power of 25 W per box, and for the first time the charger is equipped with a USB-C connection, so you get a USB-C-USB-C cable in the box. The S20 Ultra is also the only one in the S20 series that supports 45-watt fast charging speeds through a separately sold adapter (as in Note 10+).
Samsung has also improved wireless charging, which is still supported, but is now even faster.
Price and release date
You can pre-order the Galaxy S20 Ultra starting on February 20, from March 6 the phone will go to stores.
As for the Russian market, here it will cost 99,990 rubles for the 128 GB version.
