Rock paintings with scenes from the wars of the Assyrian Empire found

A team of experts in Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, found carvings on marble slabs.Archaeologists

found artifacts when they were working on restoring the ancient Mashkin Gate. They were previously bulldozed by militants from a local terrorist group in 2016.

Fadhil Mohammed, head of the restoration work, said experts were surprised to find "eight frescoes with inscriptions, decorative designs and inscriptions".

Mashkinsky Gate was one of the largestgate of Nineveh, an ancient Assyrian city in this part of the historical region of Mesopotamia. The discovered carvings show, among other things, a warrior preparing to shoot an arrow, while others show palm trees.

“The scriptures show that these frescoes were made during the reign of King Sennacherib,” Muhammad explains, referring to the king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire who ruled from 705 to 681 BC.

What is now Iraq used to contain some of the earliest cities in the world. Thousands of archaeological sites are scattered across the country, where the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians once lived.
