Rocket engine partially fueled by waste plastic passed tests

The new rocket's engine runs partly on plastic waste. Pulsar Fusion is also exploring technology

The idea of ​​incorporating recycled plastic waste intoHybrid rocket fuel is not unique. It was studied at Virgin Galactic. In 2014, they tested a rocket powered by thermosetting plastic fuel. But this idea was quickly abandoned after an unsuccessful test flight. 

Researchers from Pulsar Fusion usedfor rocket testing, a hybrid fuel consisting of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and nitrous oxide oxidizer is supplied to the combustion chamber under controlled pressure through a valve. HDPE is used to create many plastic products, such as bottles, pipes, and cutting boards. This is a popular type of plastic that can be actively used. 

In mid-November 2021, PulsarFusion has completed the first static tests of its hybrid rocket engine. The fuel burned successfully, and during the tests the usual fire plume was visible. The company plans to continue testing, but with a demonstration for potential clients.
