Russia proposed to ban encryption protocols

The Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media has proposed banning encryption protocols.

With their help, the name of the site is hidden online anduser's personal data. This became known from an official document - amendments to the law “On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection”, published on the portal of draft regulatory legal acts Regulation.gov.ru.

According to the explanatory note to the bill,the use of such algorithms and encryption methods makes it difficult to encrypt traffic, so in Russia it is more difficult to identify and block certain sites. Ministry experts note that the number of such protocols is growing - they help to hide the network addresses of devices.

These technologies are now being actively implemented inInternet, many sites hosted by large foreign providers are starting to use them. Thus, Google is gradually introducing support for DNS over HTTPS into its Chrome browser, and Mozilla is also gradually rolling out support for this protocol in the Firefox browser by default.

The document also notes that the billprepared in pursuance of the decision of the Russian Security Council of December 4, 2019 in order to counter the dissemination of illegal information on the Internet. In case of violation of the prohibition, it is proposed to suspend the operation of the Internet resource with prohibited encryption protocols.
