The therapeutic protein HSVtk is capable of converting the prodrug ganciclovir into a toxin that kills cancer cells. The process takes place inside the tumor, which reduces its toxicity to normal tissues. The therapeutic protein hGM-CSF, in turn, attracts cells of the immune system to the tumor and activates them. As a result of the combined action of HSVtk and GM-CSF, the antitumor immune response can be activated. The developers expect that this approach could lead to long-term remission in patients.
In October, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation issued a permit for conducting phase I clinical trials. Patient treatment will start in January 2022.
