Experts proposed a scenario for eye movementa robot during a dialogue with a person, which would allow creating the illusion of a change in internal mental states, like a thinking being. For this, an experiment was conducted, the participants of which were 46 people and two android robots.
Three situations have been proposed:in the first, the robot tells a story to the test subject; in the second, the human explains something to the android; in the third, the human and the robot solve a puzzle together. After that, people had to evaluate the quality of communication of robots.
As noted by the participants, the most plausible"alive" was a robot that changed the trajectory of the gaze. There were several options. When the robot told something, it looked the interlocutor in the eye, then avoided direct eye contact. When a robot solved a puzzle with a human, its attention shifted from the partner to the game itself; and when he listened to a story, he looked first into the eyes, then into the face of the narrator. This version of the look looked the most emotional.
“We understand that the robot must respond to yoursight. But depending on the tasks, it can behave differently. If the robot looks at you all the time, then this is also poorly perceived, so there must be a balance between a direct look and a sideways look, ”said Artemy Kotov, a researcher at the Russian State Humanitarian University.
