Dentures are already widely used, and to prevent a reaction from the immune system and to increase strength they are treated with glutaraldehyde.

This treatment has a downside - the substance catalyzes the development of calcification, the deposition of calcium salts on tissues. As a result, the prosthesis has a limited life.

In a new study, scientists improvedmethod, preventing calcification by additionally modifying the surface of the matrix. The service life of such a prosthesis without the need for replacement has increased to 20 years.

The researchers treated the surface with a “diamond film”—a coating of nanodiamonds. The treatment occurs by immersing the bovine pericardium in an aqueous suspension of nanodiamond powder.

Now the parameters of strength and durability were able to combine. Russian scientists have patented a biological prosthesis based on a bovine pericardium with a suspension of nanodiamonds applied to the surface.
