Russian scientists have published a book on how AI and gadgets have changed medicine

Karpov and the head of the Laboratory of Neuroscience and Cognitive Technologies at Innopolis University, Alexander Khramov, published the book “Information Technologies, Computing Systems and AI in Medicine.”

The scope of application of AI in medicine needs to be givenspecial attention, say the authors of the new book. The fact is that this is an interdisciplinary field where the achievements of computational mathematics, technologies for constructing software and hardware systems and the experience of doctors converge. In their work, scientists paid special attention to the ethics of AI in biomedicine and healthcare, and also examined specific cases implemented in Russia in the field of digital medicine and AI systems in healthcare. In addition, the authors described the training of digital health professionals.

Information technology, computing systemsand artificial intelligence in medicine are assistive technologies that support health research and medical practice in general, including treatment, recovery, disease prevention and health promotion for individuals and entire populations. Digital tools of modern medicine will make it possible to make a breakthrough in the very approach to treatment and prevention of diseases.

Previously, medicine was based in some sense on a disease-oriented approach,
namely on the idea that practitionersDoctors should focus their activities only on recognizing and treating symptoms. In contrast, patient-centered medicine places great importance on recognizing and appreciating patients' values, desires, expectations, personal goals, and life experiences in general. Within the personalized concept, we should look for signs (or biomarkers) of the patient's conditions and try to correlate them with the prognosis of the patient's health or disease course.

Is it possible without digital medicine?We believe not, because such an ambitious goal cannot be achieved by classical methods, in fact, we should aim to create a digital model of the patient, using various measurements that accumulate over a long period of observation. This task requires the consistent solution of the following sequential tasks in the framework of the creation of digital healthcare assistive technologies:
— collection of patient data within digital medical devices (digital doctor tools);
— storage of all data in uniform standards, the possibility of anonymized
access to this data for the development of new methods and technologies for the treatment/diagnosis of patients;
– creation of automatic processing methodspatient’s medical data to identify biomarkers of diseases, such methods will most likely have elements of AI in modern realities, which automatically sets the task of transparency and explainability of AI algorithms
in medicine.

So, the paradigm of modern health care isthe active role of a person in maintaining his health and life. "The trajectory of development is defined - the movement towards forecasting, prevention and a healthy lifestyle." This requires new processes, the so-called. medical support using the above digital assistive tools,
which, from an economic point of view, can largelyto become a solution to the problems caused by demographic changes and the resource intensity of modern medical technologies. Information technology, computing systems and AI are the tools to create the necessary ecosystem for this.
