Experts note that the artifact is very unusual.First of all, it is surprising that the saber was found in such good condition.Usually, iron weapons of this period rust more.Secondly, archaeologists noteand the standard style of this weapon – such curved single-edged swords were used by both the Turks and the Byzantines at the time of the attack on the monastery in the 14th century, saysarchaeologist Erricos Maniotis, a doctoral student at Masaryk University in Brno in the Czech Republic, who studied the sword.
"It is difficult to determine whether the sword belonged to the Byzantine defenders or the Turkish pirates," Maniotis noted in an interview with Live Science. “They both used the same weapons during this period.”

Scientists believe that the found saber couldparticipate in one of three military actions of the 14th century: during the attacks of Turkish pirates along the coast, including the kidnapping in 1344 of the administrators of the Athos monastery; during the occupation of the region from 1345 to 1371 by the troops of the Serbian king Stefan Dusan, who sought to conquer Byzantine territories in the west; or during the siege of Thessalonica by Ottoman troops from 1383 to 1387, when the Chalkidiki region was frequently raided for food.
