Samsung announced the world's first 108-megapixel image sensor for smartphones

Samsung officially introduced the ISOCELL Bright HMX image sensor with a record resolution of 108

megapixels. The new sensor was created in conjunction with Xiaomi and this is not just a demonstration of technology. Mass production will begin this month.


For operation, Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX uses1 / 1.33 inch sensor. In the cameras of smartphones, this optical format is used for the first time. The pixel size is 0.8 microns - the same as the recently announced ISOCELL Bright GW1 (64 megapixels).

Bright HMX is able to create photos withwith a resolution of 12032 x 9024 pixels, and also record video with a resolution of 6K (6016 x 3384) with a frequency of 30 fps. The large sensor size allows the HMX to absorb more light in low light. And Smart-ISO technology helps the sensor to choose the right sensitivity, in accordance with the environment. Also in the new product there is a proprietary function of combining pixels Samsung Tetracell, but when it is used, the resolution drops to 27 megapixels.

The first device with a Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor will be the unknown Xiaomi smartphone. They may well be the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Mix 4.
