Samsung announced the world's first 108-megapixel image sensor for smartphones

Samsung has officially introduced the ISOCELL Bright HMX image sensor with a record resolution of 108

megapixels. The new sensor was created jointly with Xiaomi and is not just a technology demonstration. Mass production will begin this month.

For Samsung ISOCELL Bright operationHMX uses a 1/1.33 inch sensor. This is the first time this optical format has been used in smartphone cameras. At the same time, the pixel size is 0.8 microns - the same as the recently announced ISOCELL Bright GW1 (64 megapixels).

Bright HMX is capable of creating photos withresolution of 12032 x 9024 pixels, and also record video with a resolution of 6K (6016 x 3384) at 30 fps. The larger sensor size allows the HMX to absorb more light in low light conditions. And Smart-ISO technology helps the sensor choose the right light sensitivity according to the surroundings. The new product also features Samsung's proprietary Tetracell pixel combining function, but when using it, the resolution is reduced to 27 megapixels.

The first device with the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor will be an unknown Xiaomi smartphone. It may well be the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Mix 4.
